Following his studies of mechanical engineering at the Technical University in Darmstadt (from 1979 to 1985) Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Weigand worked for five years as Scientific Employee at the Division Machine Design and Mechanics of the Technical University Darmstadt. His scientific work focused on Keyed Shaft-Hub-Connections and 1991 he was awarded the degree Dr.-Ing. based on his dissertation „Stress and strain in keyed shaft-hub-connections under rotating bending load“.

Afterwards he worked five years as engineer for design and development for the company P.I.V. Antrieb W. Reimers GmbH in Bad Homburg v.d.H. (Germany). Main task was the reengineering of a series of bevel-helical gearboxes for industrial applications.
